Key essential oils and their benefits

These are some top essential oils that are easy to source and really can be useful for many different situations. Having an essential oil toolkit gives you a natural way to help yourself and others.


Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) - ‘The All rounder’

  • Renowned for its calming and relaxing properties, lavender oil is widely used to promote sleep, ease anxiety, and relieve stress.
  • It can be diffused in the air, applied topically (diluted with a carrier oil) to temples or wrists, or added to bathwater.
Peppermint (Mentha piperita) - A booster
  • Known for its invigorating and minty scent, peppermint oil is helpful for relieving headaches, nausea, and congestion.
  • It can be diffused in the air, inhaled directly (for short periods), or applied topically (diluted with a carrier oil) to the temples or forehead.
Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) - The 1st Aider
  • A natural antiseptic with purifying properties, tea tree oil is commonly used to treat acne and minor skin irritations.
  • Due to its potency, it should be diluted well with a carrier oil before topical application.
  • One to carry in your bag on holiday, pre mixed with a carrier oil for those pesky mozzie bites.
Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) - St Johns Ambulance
  • With its refreshing and decongestant properties, eucalyptus oil is beneficial for relieving coughs, colds, and sinus congestion.
  • It can be diffused in the air, inhaled directly (for short periods), or applied topically (diluted with a carrier oil) to the chest or throat.
  • This is good to leave in your draw at work, add a few drops to a tissue to inhale as needed. 
Lemon (Citrus limon) - The Cleaner
  • Lemon oil possesses uplifting and mood-boosting properties. It's also a natural cleaning agent and air purifier.
  • Due to its citrus content, lemon oil can increase sun sensitivity so avoid applying it before sun exposure. It can be diffused in the air or diluted for topical use.
  • Mixing Pine essential oil with lemon essential oil can make a great kitchen disinfectant spray.
Frankincense (Boswellia sacra) - The King (or Queen!)
  • Often referred to as the "king of oils," frankincense oil is valued for its calming and grounding properties. It may also promote relaxation and emotional well-being.
  • It can be diffused in the air, inhaled directly (for short periods), or applied topically (diluted with a carrier oil).
Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) - The female friend
  • Geranium oil is known for its balancing and mood-regulating properties. It may also help alleviate symptoms of PMS and menopause.
  • Apply topically (diluted with a carrier oil) to the lower abdomen for instant action.
